Tuesday Travels: the Seattle Edition

Welcome to Tuesday Travels on Traveling with Baby.  Each week, a a cool city will be featured, and a local blogger will guide you through the ins and outs of family vacationing fun.  This weekly tour will help you find the most fun and inexpensive family activities for babies, toddlers, and young children–including the best kept secrets that aren’t on the traveler’s bureau .  This summer’s series features cities from coast to coast, and even Canada!

I always welcome guest blogger participation.  Please contact me if you’d like to join in on Tuesday Travels tours.

This week’s featured city is my second favorite city in the United States, Seattle, Washington.  I lived there as a toddler, and whenever I get a chance I head back there to visit.  Your tour guide this week is Seattle local Jenny from Absolutely Bananas.  Jenny mentions some of my most favorite haunts in Seattle.  Her blog, is absolutely hilarious–she’s a photoshop wizard with a penchant for humor that will keep you in stitches.

Seattle is a vibrant and beautiful city. There’s a myriad of things to do here when the weather’s nice and even when it’s not. Here are a few of my favorite outings for the whole family.

The Seattle waterfront. On a sunny day there’s nowhere as glorious. Watch the ferries travel to and from Bainbridge island, pick up fish and chips at one of many take-out restaurants, and be sure to follow up with a big ice cream cone.

Check out the newly remodeled Seattle Aquarium and (our personal favorite) the very interactive Maritime Odyssey Museum.

Make sure to leave time to head up the steps to Pike Place Market to watch fish fly through the air and wander through a bounty of fresh produce, fresh-friend donuts, and artists’ wares.

Seattle Center. No visit to Seattle is complete without a trip to Seattle Center. On a nice day, let the kids play in the International Fountain, which is always a family favorite.

There’s plenty to see and do here, including the EMP, Pacific Science Center, Children’s Museum, and the Space Needle. Take the elevator to the top and marvel at the view!

Woodland Park Zoo. There’s a reason this zoo is in one of the top zoos in the United States. Beautifully and thoughtfully designed, most exhibit feature animals in natural habitats. No cages here! Stop in to the Zoomazium to let the kids run and play on the treehouse and rock climbing exhibit.

Carkeek Park
There are so many amazing parks in Seattle. If I had to choose a favorite, I’d choose Carkeek Park, which has a little bit of everything. Hiking, a fabulous beach, and a wonderful playground. Bring a picnic, as you could easily spend a whole day here!
