Ellis Paul’s Family Show

dancing and laughingOn Wednesday, Calvin and I attended one of the two Charlottesville family shows with Ellis Paul at Explorations Play Studio.  There was a full crowd of babies, toddlers, kids, and moms.

Ellis was a brilliant performer who appealed to little ones while simultaneously amusing moms with humor pertaining to “our” generation.  He did a full set which included the most popular tunes from Dragonfly Races as well Calvin with Ellis Paulas some well-known songs that have been sung by families for generations including a rambunctious round of She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain When She Comes and I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.  Ellis also performed all of the verses penned by Woodie Guthrie in This Land Is Your Land, including the ones which were banned from children’s textbooks because they didn’t jive with the political correctness of the day.

dancing to Ellis PaulYou know a performer is genuinely authentic and entertaining when he can do a show completely unplugged with only voice, guitar, and harmonica, and he sounds even more amazing than his recorded album.  He encouraged active audience participation from singing to dancing to choreography.  Let’s face it, kids love a performer who can create lyrics to a zoo song off the cuff which includes panda, zebra, and elephant sounds (requested by audience members throughout the song).

If Ellis Paul’s national tour is stopping through your town this summer, you won’t want to miss it.  His next adult album is scheduled to release later this summer.  You can also catch my exclusive interview with Ellis Paul that took place in April.

Ellis Paul – Live in Charlottesville

Please welcome critically-acclaimed folk musician Ellis Paul to Traveling with Baby.  You may have heard him on the soundtrack of Me, Myself, and Irene with Jim Carrey or perhaps, Shallow Hal with Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow.  This American songwriting icon has recently released his first (of many) children’s album titled The Dragonfly Races.  It’s story-telling folksy tunes targeted for young audiences, but definitely enjoyed by the whole family.

I am so excited about this interview exclusive.  I pondered Ellis’ answers for several days afterward, and they’ve given me a fresh perspective in choosing great children’s music for my son.

The Dragonfly Races national tour kicked off in Roanoke, Virginia in early April.  On May 13th, Charlottesville’s Explorations Play Studio will showcase Ellis in two family shows at 10 AM and 3:30 PM.  Tickets are $5 per person, and they’re in limited supply.  Please, call in advance to reserve yours! Venue: Explorations Play Studio, 1919 Commonwealth Dr, Charlottsville, VA 22901
